Shortly after Donald Trump accepted the appointment of a special council in the Russia investigation he turned to Twitter to rant that the whole situation was a “witch hunt.”
Trump continued ranting on Twitter later in the day posting, “With all the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama administration there was never a special councel appointed.” (Notice Trump spelled council incorrectly)
No one seems to know what “illegal” acts Trump is referring to in the tweet.
Trump followed that tweet up with another posting, “The single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!”
On Wednesday, Trump gave a brief statement: “As I have stated many times, a thorough investigation will confirm what we already know – there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country.”
Reportedly the news that Robert Mueller had been selected to lead the Russia probe stunned the White House, which learned the news just 30 minutes before it went public.
The Mueller appointment comes just a little longer than a week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Many Democrats and even some Republicans believe that Comey was terminated by Trump to shut down the Russia probe.
The day before Mueller was appointed to the probe the White House was rocked by the news that Comey had written memos from his past meetings with Trump. Those memos reportedly included one where the president asked him to stop the investigation into Michael Flynn, who was at the time the national security advisor.
Sen. John McCain was asked about Trump’s tweets following Mueller’s appointment and he stated: “I know of no one who doesn’t have the highest regard for Robert Mueller.”
Trump’s Twitter rants are sure to become commonplace as the Russia probe continues.
